Hundreds of dedicated volunteers deliver meals to individuals who are homebound, provide general assistance in Senior Centers, work at special events and help our staff with day to day activities. All programs rely on the support of invaluable volunteers.

Our volunteers are a critical part of our operation. The most common volunteer job is delivering meals and friendly greetings to homebound seniors. There are also opportunities for youth and families as well as organization and group volunteering options.

WHO CAN VOLUNTEER?

We welcome everyone who is wiling to help. It's doesn't matter if you're a single person, family, group or organization

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO VOLUNTEER AT MOW?

At Meals on Wheels, we strive to make the volunteer experience enjoyable, rewarding and flexible. We offer many options from meal delivery to commissary assistance to offsite projects and all are designed to work with the volunteer’s schedule. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 9:30 and 12:30 and can be done on a regularly scheduled basis (i.e.; every Wednesday, the second Tuesday of the month, etc.) or according to the day to day availability of the volunteer. Commissary assistance can include helping to get meals out in the early mornings or cleaning out coolers after they are returned in the early afternoons. Offsite options offer maximum flexibility as projects are completed in your own time and delivered to Meals on Wheels. It’s easy to get started! Click HERE to fill out a Volunteer application now!

Volunteer Driver

Volunteer drivers typically pick up meals at a central location and deliver them along a predetermined route directly to the homes of seniors in Rockland County.

Follow these step by step instructions to get started as a volunteer driver!

Step 1. Complete Volunteer Application [here]

OR

Step 2. Send the following to Volunteer Coordinator Denise Formoso at volunteercoordinator@mowrockland.org:

  • Completed volunteer application
  • Copy of driver's license
  • Copy of insurance card
  • Copy of declaration page acknowledging a minimum of $100,000/$300,000 in auto insurance coverage

Step 3: Wait for confirmation from the Volunteer Coordinator that you have been approved as a volunteer.

Step 4. Once approved, Complete Driver Training and choose a route(s) on the Weekly Open Routes sheet.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

Commissary Assistance

Assist with meal preparation in our commissary located in Nanuet Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m., including holidays. The commissary is not open on the weekends. Must be over 12 years of age. You must register to volunteer in the commissary by emailing Olivia DiGiacomo at odigiacomo@mowrockland.org. Cards and Crafts

Many of us look forward to celebrating holidays with the ones we love, but for some, holidays of any kind can lead to extra heartache and loneliness. Caring Cards & Crafts is a great project for students, teachers, youth groups and families that can bring a smile to the faces of home delivered meal recipients. They may celebrate a particular holiday or just send warm wishes for a great day. Completed cards must be delivered to the volunteer coordinator at least a week before the holiday they celebrate. Pantry Boxes

This emergency food program evolved to insure that the Agency's homebound recipients have a This emergency food program ensures that the agency's homebound recipients have a sufficient supply of non-perishable food items in case of weather related or other emergencies. Donated shelf-stable food items are collected and packed into wrapped shoe boxes as complete meals. MUST USE Pantry Box instructions to complete. Boxes that do not adhere to instructions cannot be accepted. 

On-Site Group Volunteering

Group volunteering is a great way to encourage teamwork, promote leadership, enhance morale, advance philanthropic goals, and increase community involvement. Examples of the types of groups we have welcomed include Schools, Churches, Rotaries, Real Estate Agencies, Restaurants, and Large Corporations. Options include meal delivery, special projects (IE painting, cleaning projects), commissary assistance and more. If you have an idea, we'd love to hear it!
