What Drives Our Volunteers

Testimonial from Jay/Driver:

When Jay Rifkin retired he was looking to do something for the community. He had heard about Meals on Wheels and decided to give delivering meals as a volunteer driver a try. Eight years later Jay still volunteers every Friday! The agency truly appreciates Jay's commitment.

Testimonial from Jackie/Driver, Valley Cottage Route:

"I had a friend who did something similar (to this) in the city and I thought it was a nice idea and I had a little extra time. I find it rewarding. I drive once a week to 8 homes, it takes about an hour to an hour and a half a week...it's serving a need and (I enjoy) seeing the people, they seem to really appreciate it."

Testimonial from Patricia/Volunteer Receptionist from Pearl River/Clarkstown Senior Center:

"I love (volunteering) at the door...it's the idea of doing something and having somebody around, not being alone all the time...(I advise those considering volunteering here that) this could be something you do whenever you wanted...instead of sitting at home, watching TV!"

Testimonial from Fred/Driver Normandy Village, Thorpe Village and Sparkill (30 homes week):

"I retired...from the wholesale meat business...in 2007 and I was looking to volunteer in some way. ...Being with Meals on Wheels gives me the opportunity to give back to the community. It's a good feeling to be able to help someone."

Testimonial from Mark, Driver for 10 Homes in Nyack and Senior Center Volunteer:

"I lead (the seniors) in exercise before they eat lunch, help with lunch, do Bingo or special events like Thanksgiving or St. Patrick's Day, I set it up and tear it down, it's a wonderful experience for the seniors...(When I was looking to volunteer) I heard of all the things Meals on Wheels did and (decided) to give a little bit instead of being self-centered and giving to myself...Here the seniors are very appreciative...they're just nice people and I enjoy working with them...sometimes people just want someone to talk to."

Testimonial from Chris/Driver to 9 Homes:

"I'd been looking for someplace to start volunteering locally...(while I am) going to college at St. Thomas Aquinas...someone from Leadership Rockland suggested Meals on Wheels... as a really rewarding experience...Sharon Martini's enthusiasm wore off on me. I couldn't wait to get started after meeting her! As a driver...I feel really fortunate that I get to see the happiness that (my efforts) bring to some of the seniors that I deliver to. "

Testimonial from Bob/Driver, New City, 12-13 Homes:

"In the mid-80's, Meals on Wheels provided for my mom and dad, as well as for my in-laws...it was very satisfying knowing that my (family) were getting their meals (and being checked in on) and I didn't have to be concerned about it...When I retired...I said, You know what, I've had a great life. Now it's time to give back...this is about saying Thank You."

Testimonial from Judy/Fundraising Volunteer:

"My sister had been involved for Meals on Wheels and introduced me to Sharon and Marie and I now I've become part of the Meals on Wheels family. I work the different fundraisers; I've worked at the Golf Outing, the Run, I come into the office and help run off the monthly newsletter; I've done Ladles of Love where we give soup to different seniors, I'm part of the VODKA Committee which is Volunteer Outreach Development Kindness and Administration...and sometimes I come into the office and just help out where I am needed."

What Our Volunteers Are Saying About Us?

"When I was looking for a place to volunteer to give back to the community, I felt so welcomed at Meals on Wheels, it was a pleasure to go each week. Though I only had two hours a week to spare to help out with some clerical work for MOW, the staff there were so appreciative that I felt I had changed the world in a small way. Now I am serving on a marketing committee and on special events and fundraising and am so happy to be part of an organization that provides such an important service to our community."

We Appreciate Our Volunteers!

On Monday, October 6th many of our volunteers enjoyed bagels and coffee at a Bagel Pit Stop for our Homebound Meal Delivery Program drivers. The Bagel Pit Stop was just a small way for Meals on Ways to say thank you. With over 40 routes throughout the county, the agency could not meet the meal needs of the home bound without all of our wonderful volunteers!

Meals on Wheels Volunteers Appreciated!

Meals on Wheels volunteers enjoyed America's favorite past time courtesy of the Ramapo Local Development Corporation's generous donation of box tickets to Rockland Boulders games in both July and August.
